Late February in Kutch has a special charm. The winter chill is almost gone, summer heat has not arrived yet, and the weather sits in that perfect middle ground. That was exactly the kind of day we got when my friends Sanjay Mahida, Ajay Mahida, and I decided to take a spontaneous bike trip from Bhuj to Mandvi.
The Day at a Glance πΊοΈ
Starting the Bike Ride from Bhuj
We started our ride from Bhuj at 9:00 in the morning. The weather was fantastic. Not hot, not cold. Just pleasant desert air and clear skies.
The road toward Mandvi is one of the nicest routes in Kutch. Wide stretches, very little traffic, and beautiful rural scenery on both sides. Riding with friends makes the journey even more enjoyable. Sometimes the best part of a trip is simply the road itself.
After an easy and comfortable ride, we reached our first destination around 11:30 AM.
Visit to Shyamji Krishna Varma Memorial
Our first stop was the impressive Shyamji Krishna Varma Memorial. The memorial honors the famous freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma, who played an important role in India's independence movement. The complex is beautifully designed and maintained, with museum galleries, statues, and historical information.
We spent quite some time exploring the place and taking photographs. The architecture and open spaces make it a great location for photography. The peaceful atmosphere of the memorial also makes it a nice place to begin a Mandvi trip.
Enjoying Famous Mandvi Dabeli
Once we reached Mandvi town, hunger kicked in. And when you are in Mandvi, there is one snack you simply cannot skip β Dabeli.
Mandvi is famous for this delicious local street food. We stopped at a small shop and enjoyed a plate of spicy, flavorful Mandvi dabeli. The combination of sweet chutney, spicy masala, peanuts, and pomegranate makes it incredibly tasty. Simple food. Big satisfaction.
Mandvi Lake and Thousands of White Birds
After lunch we visited Mandvi Lake, which turned out to be a beautiful surprise. The lake was full of thousands of white water birds resting on the water and flying around. The sight was amazing β seeing such a large number of birds together creates a very peaceful scene.
Of course, this became another great opportunity for photography. I managed to capture many photos of the birds and the reflections on the water. Moments like this are the unexpected highlights of travel.
Afternoon at Mandvi Beach
Our next stop was the famous Mandvi Beach. By the time we arrived, the beach was lively. The tide was good and there were many people enjoying the afternoon.
The beach had everything you could want:
- πͺ Camel rides along the shore
- π£ Water rides and activities
- π¨βπ©βπ§ Families enjoying the sea breeze
- πΈ Photographers capturing the scenery
- π¨ Wind turbines creating a scenic backdrop
Mandvi beach has a very relaxed atmosphere. The long coastline, windmills in the background, and the sound of waves create a perfect setting for spending a couple of hours. We stayed there for about one hour, walking around and taking plenty of photos.
Exploring Vijay Vilas Palace
Our final major stop was the stunning Vijay Vilas Palace. This palace is truly one of the most beautiful heritage sites in Kutch. The architecture is magnificent, with detailed stone carvings, elegant balconies, and a grand structure surrounded by gardens.
We explored both the inside and outside of the palace and photographed the entire complex. One of the highlights is the terrace view β from the top, you can see the surrounding landscape and even glimpse the Arabian Sea in the distance.
It is easy to see why many Bollywood films have been shot here. The palace is a photographer's dream β every corner offers a different, beautiful frame.
Sunset Ride Back to Bhuj
After finishing our visit to the palace, it was time to head back. We started the return ride toward Bhuj and reached around 6:30 PM, just as the sun was setting. The golden desert light during sunset made the ride back even more beautiful.
A complete day. A spontaneous decision that turned into a journey worth remembering.
