Significance

Kandla, officially renamed Deendayal Port, is a colossus of maritime trade. Located on the Kandla Creek, it is the largest port in India by volume of cargo handled. It serves as the primary maritime gateway for the entire northern and western hinterland of India, playing a critical role in the nation's economy.

History

The story of Kandla is one of post-independence resilience. After the partition in 1947, India lost the Port of Karachi to Pakistan. To fill this void for western India, Kandla was envisioned and constructed in the 1950s. In 1965, it became Asia's first Special Economic Zone (SEZ). In 2017, it was renamed Deendayal Port Trust to honor Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
